We have discussed the top vacation spots for couples and come up with a mixture of budget and luxurious destinations. We will give you some tips on how to do the luxurious ones on a budget though, don’t worry.

We don’t want to just throw a list of destinations at you that have no meaning. We want to give you some idea of what you can do in these places! Keep reading for some travel inspiration for your next romantic getaway.

Greece, Europe

For this romantic getaway, take a flight to south-eastern Europe and experience ancient ruins, fresh seafood, crystal clear waters, pristine beaches, and everything else you could want in paradise. It can be difficult to decide where to visit in Greece as you have mainland, which is where the capital Athens is located. Then you have many, many islands to choose from. We will give you a quick breakdown of some of them:

- Kefalonia/Cephalonia

- Santorini

- Cos

- Crete

- Mykonos

- Corfu

- Rhodes

There are hundreds more islands to choose from, some being only accessible by boat! Each island has its own amazing features but we had to pick one for our list. At a close 2nd place, Santorini came in. Santorini is a beautiful island, once the location of a large volcanic eruption that destroyed the island. This has left beautiful landscapes and volcanic black beaches. Of course, most of you will recognise the white Cycladic houses that constantly get re-posted on social media, this is an example of the romantic beauty that is present there! Unfortunately, for a Greek island, it is known for being one of the most expensive and very touristy.

That’s why we have picked a different top romantic getaway for Greece. Kefalonia or Cephalonia is our number one. As a member of the Ionian islands, you can find beautiful mountains, breathtaking views, cheap wine and food, and one of the nicest beaches in the world (Myrtos). But there’s another reason why this is one of our favourites and that is because it does not yet attract the large amount of tourists that other islands do. They are expanding the airport though so visit now before over-tourism ruins it.

Here are the top things to do in Kefalonia:

Have wine under the stars

When night time hits, just look up and you will see a blanket of sparkling stars. Just take a bottle of wine and sit somewhere outside. Simple, cheap, and romantic. If you want to make it even more romantic, have a little dance too.

Take a day trip to Fiscardo

This is one of the most picturesque places we have seen. Turquoise blue waters, colourful houses, flowers everywhere, fresh seafood, cute restaurants/bars, and so much more. You can enjoy a nice romantic dinner, stroll through the town, or even a swim.

Go to Assos at night

Another picturesque location both daytime and night time. Located underneath a stunning castle and looking up at the mountains behind with pristine waters all around you, this is a must-do for your romantic getaway.

Take a trip to the beach

There are hundreds of beaches in Kefalonia and the most popular is Myrtos, but we aren't going to suggest that as it can become extremely crowded (it is worth seeing though). The thing that we suggest here is to find a small private beach that you have to yourself, some can only be accessed by boat!

  • Best time to visit Kefalonia for weather - May through September

  • Best time to visit Kefalonia to avoid tourists - June or July

  • Temperatures - Between May & September it can stay around 74°F

  • Price - $$

  • Car - It’s best to rent a car for this location

  • Other tips - Visit this winery and try some wine!

2. Iceland

As our readers might already know, Iceland is where we met and it is our favourite place. If we met in any other place but Iceland, Couples Carry-on probably wouldn't be here now! It may seem like a strange pick for a romantic getaway but you just have to trust us.There is no point in mentioning a specific location in Iceland as the whole country has elements of romance.

Depending on the season you go, there could be blankets of snow everywhere or no snow at all. Either way, you won’t regret it. The main thing that we can suggest for this trip is to hire a car and drive Route 1 around the whole country. You will see everything, experience a fun, romantic road trip, and never want to leave after. We will give you some locations to stop off at to make it even more romantic!

Reykjavik

The capital is full of romantic places to visit. Take a walk around the centre in the day and at night. The day can be filled with cute shops, coffee shops, mountain views, and the famous Hallgrimskirkja church (pictures do not do it justice). At night the city comes alive and there are many different bars, restaurants, and clubs to choose from.

Vik

You will encounter the tiny town of Vik on your journey through Route 1, we would advise everyone to stop there at least for the sunset. You can take a stroll down to Reynisfjara black sand beach and gawk at the impressive cliffs and ocean or head up to the Vík í Mýrdal Church which is the best spot to watch the sunset over the cliffs and ocean.

Diamond Beach

They say that diamonds are a girl's best friend! Although, disclaimer, this isn’t actually a beach full of diamonds. It is however a black sand beach full of glistening pieces of iceberg that look like diamonds. As romantic as that would be, we want to give you a little tip, whilst we recommend to stop there and see the beach, only spend a little amount of time there as there will be hordes of tourists. Instead, stop at this point on the map below, and just start walking. There will be no tourists and you will encounter even more impressive “diamonds”.

Blue Lagoon

This one is a must for any traveller. Unfortunately you will never be able to avoid the crowds of tourists no matter when you go. We would recommend going at night time if you are visiting for a romantic getaway. You can float around in the warm silky waters with a drink whilst looking up at the Northern Lights… How much more romantic can it get? Just a word of warning though, you will miss out on seeing the amazing colors of the lagoon if you go at night.

The Secret Lagoon

Relaxing in a hot spring with your significant other can be a very romantic experience. There are many different hot springs in Iceland but we recommend The Secret Lagoon.

Northern Lights

Whatever your reason for taking a romantic getaway, seeing the Northern Lights will be the highlight. It depends completely on luck as to whether you see them or not. Take a look at some of Iceland’s meteorology websites where they will advise on the likelihood of seeing them. You can take a tour but we recommend just walking or driving to spot them yourselves, it’s more romantic that way.

  • Best time to visit Iceland - October or November

  • Temperatures - November will bring an average temperature of 34°F

  • Price - $$$

  • Car - You need a car to travel the ring road

  • Other tips - Many tourists will visit Iceland during the summer, but you're likely to see the Northern Lights in November.

3. French Polynesia, Bora Bora

Everyone’s heard of this place and if you haven’t, it’s paradise. Bora Bora is more on the expensive side as one of the top romantic getaways on our list, but it can be done. You can enjoy crystal clear waters, green fields, mountains, fresh fruit, and living in a paradise location when you visit the South Pacific.

Looking at Bora Bora flights can be off putting for anyone and a romantic getaway like this may only seem like a dream. It may not be feasible for everyone but here are our tips on how to get the lowest costing Bora Bora flights possible:

  • If you are travelling to New Zealand, book your return flight from New Zealand. It is the cheapest flight you will get.

  • Don’t stay longer than a week, a week is enough.

  • Book an Airbnb (yes there are Airbnb’s here) although the dream is to stay in the Bora Bora huts, these cost $600 a night, so maybe do it for one night only!

When it comes to Bora Bora hotels it goes without saying that you will have to stay in one of the Bora Bora huts. Even if it’s only for one night, it will be worth it. For a romantic getaway, one night here would be enough to satisfy any couple! But there are many more romantic things to do in Bora Bora and we will give you some ideas:

Sunset cruise

Watching a sunset on the ocean with your other half is the perfect romantic activity for your getaway. Relax on the calm blue waters and watch the sky slowly fade from deep blue to a pastel orange, then to a blood orange before ending with the night sky. This is definitely one of the top things to do in Bora Bora.

Dinner on the beach

You can arrange to have a table set up on the beach specifically for you and your loved one when you travel to Bora Bora, just ask your resort staff. Sit down and have a romantic candlelit meal on the sand while you listen to the gentle waves roll in under the sunset.

Walk the beaches

This is one thing you will not struggle to find. Bora Bora is surrounded by clear white sand beaches and islands. Take a walk and explore them, not every activity needs to involve money or planning.

Watch the stars

Being in such a remote location with very little light pollution, you will see a blanket of stars covering the sky when you sit outside at night. Sit outside with a nice drink and talk away under the stars or just lay on the beach and stargaze.

  • Best time to visit - November or April

  • Temperatures - Lows of 70°F and highs of 80°F

  • Price - $$$$$

  • Other tips - You are likely to find discounted room rates if you visit during non-peak seasons. Peak season is from March to May

4. Italy

Italy is another popular destination in Europe for romantic getaways and it is home to some of the most romantic cities in the world. There are plenty of reasons to visit this beautiful and historic country, one of them is the price. You will find that Italy is a very cheap country (away from the tourist hotspots). Food and drink (including alcohol) are considerably cheaper than other locations.

Unlike some destinations in the world, Italy just has a romantic vibe to it, even when you go to McDonald’s! Not really. As a couple you can go and try one of the many gelato cafes, rent a bicycle and ride through the cities, explore the national parks, have romantic dinners in the city, and so much more. If you are spending a fair amount of time in Italy then steer away from the cities and try the smaller towns, which are very quirky and make the perfect romantic getaway spots.

Here are the top places to visit in Italy and some romantic things to do in each place:

Venice

Take a gondola ride

Although you will battle through crowds of tourists and pay a fortune for this activity, it is still a very romantic thing to do. Almost every tourist does it but a little tip from us, have a look on the activities section of Airbnb first. You can find locals who live in Venice that actually own a Gondola and will take you out on a tour of the less crowded canals. You may even get to have a go at steering one yourself.

Walk the city streets

You don’t really have to spend money to have a romantic time in Venice. The streets are full of romance. Don’t bother with a map, just start walking and see where you end up, you will find that once you veer away from the tourist crowds there are hidden gems to see. Sometimes just walking and seeing a new place is enough to spark romance.

Have Gelato on the river

One of the main things Italy is famous for is their Gelato. You will find hundreds, if not thousands of shops for Gelato in Venice. We tried so many and don’t have any to recommend as they were all amazing. But one thing you should do is purchase your gelato close to the outskirts and go and sit on the lagoon together, watching the boats.

Have dinner/lunch/breakfast/coffee

No matter what corner you turn there will be some kind of food or drink service available. It could be a quaint coffee shop or a rustic pizza restaurant, either way, stopping off for a break from walking around can be very romantic when you visit Venice.

Verona

Watch the opera

Verona is very well known for their opera performances at the Roman amphitheatre in Piazza Bra. Get dressed up and head out on date night to have a glass of wine and watch the opera.

Visit the Love Festival

This one can only be done on Valentines Day but it is definitely worth doing for a romantic getaway. The city will have decorations and lights that focus on one thing, love. You can enjoy food & wine tastings and live music!

Take a night tour

There is something about the way Italy looks at night that leaves you in awe. You can book night tours with a guide to see Verona when it is lit up and beautiful. Or if you would rather have some alone time, then just walk yourself and get lost.

Rome

Visit the Villa Borghese Gardens

Take a stroll around the best park in Rome with your loved one. Enjoy the large fountains and stunning trees, while you walk around in the peaceful gardens. We recommend renting a bike and riding around the park at your own pace, stopping off for an ice cream along the way.

Relax at Aventine Hill

As a couple, this is one you don’t want to miss. There are many religious and historical places to visit at this location but we picked it for the sunset. Head up there before sunset and relax whilst the sky turns to orange over the top of the city. Take a bottle of wine too if you really want to!

Rent a vespa

This is a really fun thing for couples to do when visiting Rome. Rent out a Vespa scooter and whip around the city seeing all the locations with the wind blowing through your hair. Take a picnic too and stop off at the park along the way. There are many hire places available and you can do self drive or with a tour guide. If you’re nervous about driving abroad, don’t be. It’s not as bad as you think.

Eat at a rooftop restaurant

In Rome, you will have a selection of rooftop restaurants to choose from. Dining above the city whilst the sun sets is truly magical and romantic. It could even be a great proposal location! If there were any we could recommend, it would be the Aroma Restaurant. This gourmet restaurant is located at the top of the 5 star Palazzo Manfredi Hotel and offers stunning views of the Colosseum from the restaurant.

Florence

Enjoy the views at Piazzale Michelangelo

This free location with give you stunning panoramic views of Florence which will stay with you forever. There is food and drink available there with a set of steps that romantic couples like to sit on to overlook the city whilst the sun sets.

Festival of Artisanal Chocolates

At the Festival of Artisanal Chocolates or Fiera del Cioccolato Artigianale, you can enjoy some of the world's best chocolate. The debate is still open as to whether it is an aphrodisiac, but it is certainly the way to a girls heart! This festival is generally held before Valentines day and runs a week or two past it. You can cook chocolate and have tasting lessons from chocolatiers.

Take a wine tour

Italy has a wide range of vineyards and wine makers across the country which you can tour and taste to your heart's content. Florence has some great wine tours that are very popular with tourists. Book yourself onto a tour or self-drive and enjoy the best wines from the region. Take some money too so you can bring a bottle or five home!

Bike tour

Why not tie in a bike tour and a winery visit? There are lots of different tour companies that offer bike tours in the city & region. Some stop at wineries for a little tasting in the middle of your trip, don’t drink too much though! Riding a bike with your other half can be very romantic in general, even more so in the Italian vineyards.
