You will hear myths about getting the cheapest flights, what the cheapest time to fly is, and what the best day to travel is. We don't believe any of them. The way to get a cheap flight is through searching, waiting, and planning.
For example, one way that we get cheap flights when we travel is to search for a trip on Skyscanner or another search engine, and if it has a layover somewhere we would look for the cheapest option. If it is still expensive, we search for each flight separately with different airlines which could work out cheaper. It sounds confusing but it's not, for example:
Option 1: Total $700
New York to London via Iceland = $700
Option 2: Total $470
New York to Iceland = $350
Iceland to London = $120
Of course, you have to realise that if you have a short layover time and your first flight is delayed, the airline has no obligation to help you. We will go into more detail in a future travel blog.
Another great way of saving money and getting a cheap flight is to only pack a carry-on! We have seen countless times that people bring a checked bag full of items they never wear or use. So if you want to save, then ditch the checked bag. You can take a carry-on and a backpack (reasonably sized) on a flight. You'll be surprised how much you can fit in them.
As you will find out below, many travel search engines such as Skyscanner and TripAdvisor will have the option of price alerts. This allows you to search a flight and set up an alert to notify you every time a flight changes price. We set 10 to 20 alerts to test at one point to see if there were any trends, the flights only changed by $5-$10 in the first 2 weeks, and then about 3 weeks before a scheduled flight they would drop by roughly $60-$100 before increasing dramatically the closer the flight got. We once had a price alert with a drop of $170, so we booked it straight away (it increased continuously after that). If you notice that a price drop is too good to be true, then it probably is, so don't hesitate just book it!
Anyway, that's enough from us for now. You will find out more in our future travel blogs. Check out below for our top flight booking search engines and airlines. You will be sure to find a cheap flight somewhere!
